Our Shelf Elf and Giveaway!

I'm so excited to be part of the Silhouette December Challenge.  There are a total of 37 amazing Christmas projects for you to check out!  And I'm even more excited to be a part of this totally fabulous giveaway!!  My very first giveaway and let me tell you the prizes are AWESOME!  Be sure to enter at the bottom.

We have a new visitor in our house that arrived on December 1.  Just in time for the holiday challenge theme this month!  That was convenient =)  The Thomas the Train obsessed little boy in our house came up with the name Thomas.  I think it suits him just fine!

I've always loved the elf on a shelf idea. Some of the ideas that these parents come up with are genius! But then I read the book...if you haven't read it before, the basic premise is that the elf watches over the kiddos day and night and reports back to Santa on their behavior. The elf leaves on Christmas Eve with Santa and if you touch it, he loses his elf powers. That sounds like torture for a little kid!!

As tempting as it is, I didn't want to use Santa as an excuse to have my kid behave...especially since you can't use that excuse all year long! Ha! I searched high and low for a way to buy just the elf by itself, but it's only sold as part of the kit that comes with the book. Seemed like kind of a waste to spend $30 and not use the book at all, so I looked for other options...knock off elves, a reindeer or some other animal, Olaf? Nothing was just jumping out at me until I found the plush elf! So much cuter than the original, which is SO creepy, right?? The elf concept at 1/3 of the price, I was sold!

I found other bloggers that scrapped the Elf book and came up with their own traditions. Like this one from Team Studer where she wrote a letter to the kids that arrived with the elf. I loved the idea, but my little one is so in love with books that I decided to write a short little story we could read over and over during the Christmas season.

The best part is that it's totally customizable.  We put our own spin on the story and included the parts of Christmas that were important to us.

Guys, I've seriously been hoarding Christmas shapes for close to 2 years and this was the perfect opportunity to get some use out of them!  The silhouette online store has so many great elf shapes you can use for this project and they are all 50 percent off right now! Score!! Here are some of the ones I used:
Elf with ornament
Elf on a shelf
Happy Elf
Hot Cocoa Elf

Even the book I used was a pre-made shape.  Couldn't get any easier than that!!  From there I just changed the tabs and the cover and added a flap on the last page...every good kids' book needs a flap.

Here's the story we came up with for our house.  Feel free to change it up and make it your own!
Hi Jack! My name is Thomas the Elf. Santa sent me on a special trip all the way from the North Pole to your house to celebrate Christmas with you. I work with Santa all year long to make presents for all the good girls and boys, like you! My favorite color is red. I love to eat candy canes and my favorite game is hide and seek. And Christmas is my most favorite holiday of all. We wrap presents and put them under the tree and hope it gets cold enough outside for snow. Christmas is such a special time of the year. We decorate the house with pretty trees and lights and hang our stockings on the fireplace. We wrap presents and put them under the tree and hope it gets cold enough outside for snow.
We do all these things to celebrate the birth of Jesus. He was born long ago in a manager on cold Christmas night. Jesus teaches us to be kind and how to love others. At Christmas we are so excited to get presents from Santa, but Christmas is also about giving to others. Sometimes we are naughty. Even elves like me get into trouble from time to time. But we have to remember how to be kind, how to be nice, how to share and how to love others just as Jesus does. During this Christmas season I am coming to stay with you, so we can learn more about the Christmas spirit together. What are some nice things we can do to spread the Christmas cheer?
And of course we will have a lot of fun together until Santa comes to your house on Christmas day to drop off all of your presents and to pick me up! But don't worry. I'll be back each year to celebrate with you. Christmas is a time to spend with your family and your friends. And I'm so happy I get to spend it with you.
We of course kept the fun parts in there...the hide and seek game and the elf getting into trouble thing...Thomas the elf hasn't done anything naughty just yet, but my son is only 2. The hiding spots are not that elaborate, but he is thrilled every morning to wake up and find him!

Needless to say, Thomas the elf has made quite a home for himself here.  I think we'll keep him around for years to come!
